Alternatives to Synthetic Chemical Antiparasitic Drugs in Organic Livestock Farming in Europe Organic Eprints
Hoste, Hervé; Sotiraki, Smaragda; Mejer, Helena; Heckendorn, Felix; Maurer, Veronika; Thamsborg, Stig.
Gastrointestinal parasitism with helminths and protozoa remains a major threat in cattle and small ruminant production and has been “rediscovered” in pig and poultry production systems operating under organic farming rules because of the requirement to grant outdoor access to the animals. The control of these parasitic infections is a key issue for the economic viability of farms and for animal welfare. Control solutions aim at (i) providing the agronomical bases for parasite control through rational management of pastures; (ii) stimulating the host immune response through different means; (iii) exploring and evaluating the efficacy of new drugs (i.e., phytotherapy, homeopathy and nutraceuticals); and (iv) developing new concepts of application of chemical...

Helminth infections on organic dairy farms in Spain Organic Eprints
Orjales, Inmaculada; Mezo, Mercedes; Miranda, Marta; Gonzáles-Warleta, Marta; Rey-Crespo, Fransisco; Vaarst, Mette; Thamsborg, Stig; Diéguez, Fransisco Javier; Castro-Hermida, José Antonio; López-Alonso, Marta.
The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of the major helminth infections affecting organic dairy cattle in northern Spain. Milk and faecal samples were obtained from 443 milking cows. Ostertagia ostertargi and Fasciola hepatica exposure was assessed by detection of specific antibodies in milk samples and F. hepatica infection was diagnosed by the detection of coproantigens in faecal samples. Dictyocaulus viviparus and Calicophoron daubneyi infections were diagnosed by conventional coprological techniques. The prevalence of infections caused by F. hepatica was considerable low, but similar to data reported from conventional farming in the same area. The prevalence rate of C. daubneyi infection was higher than previous data mirroring an increase...

Options for parasite control using tanniferous forages in livestock in Northern temperate areas Organic Eprints
Thamsborg, Stig.
Leguminous forages with a relatively high level of condensed tannins (CT)(4-8 % of DM) fed to sheep may lead to lower faecal nematode egg counts and worm burdens. Scottish studies using a CT, quebracho in the diet have con-firmed this effect in Trichostrongylus colubriformis infections, and Danish in vitro studies have indicated a direct effect of purified CTs on preparasitic sta-ges of ovine nematodes. The legumes greater trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus), sulla (Hedysarum coronarium), sainfoin (Onybrychus viciifolia) and birdsfoot trefoil (L. corniculatus) are presently of major interest. In Denmark, nematode infected lambs grazing pure stands of sulla and sainfoin for 5 weeks have shown up to 50% reductions in egg counts compared to grazing clover. A Swedish...

Sainfoin reduces the establishment of nematode infections in grazing lambs Organic Eprints
Thamsborg, Stig; Mejer, Helena; Roepstorff, Allan.
Background: Recent studies with sheep have indicated an anti-nematodal effect of several leguminous plants, possibly associated with a high content of condensed tannins. In search for suitable local plants, an experiment was performed under Danish conditions. Method: Four 0.3 ha plots were established with pure stands of sulla (Hedysarum coronarium), white clover, sainfoin (Onybrychus viciifolia) and chicory (Cichorium intybus). Five or six parasite naive lambs were grazed for 7 weeks on each plot with repeated moves to avoid reinfection. Lambs were infected 6 times during the first 3 weeks with Ostertagia circumcincta and Trichostrongylus vitrinus, receiving a total of 42,000 L3 of each species. Results: The lambs grew at similar rates on white...
